Emilio Sereni (13 August 1907, Rome – 20 March 1977, Rome) was an Italian writer, politician and historian.
Biography
Born into a Jewish family of anti-fascist intellectuals, he graduated from the Liceo Terenzio Mamiani in Rome. Brother of the Zionist-socialist Enzo Sereni, co-founder of the kibbutz Givat Brenner, and of Enrico Sereni, a scientist linked to the anti-fascist movements of Justice and Freedom and who committed suicide at a young age] in 1926 he joined the Italian Communist Party and one year later he graduated in agronomy in Portici, starting shortly after a work of proselytism in the Neapolitan area, as in the case of Giorgio Amendola. In 1930 he went to Paris and came into contact with Palmiro Togliatti. Returning to Italy in September of the same year, he was arrested and sentenced by the Special Court to twenty years, then reduced to 15 for the accumulation of penalties.
Amnestied in 1935, he illegally expatriates to Paris with his wife Xenia Silberberg, known by the name of Marina, and their little daughter Lea; here he is responsible for cultural work and is editor-in-chief of the State Worker and The Voice of the Italians. Once again discovered, in 1943 he was sentenced to 18 years for "subversive association" but a year later he managed to escape and settled in Milan, where the party assigned him the task of directing the office of agitation and propaganda.
After having played an important role in the Resistance as a representative, together with Luigi Longo, of the Communist Party in the CLNAI of Milan and as a member of the insurrectionary committee set up in April 1945, in 1946 he joined the central committee of the PCI (he will remain there until 1975) and he was twice minister under Alcide De Gasperi: the first time as minister of post-war assistance; the second as Minister of Public Works. Elected senator in 1948 and confirmed in 1953, he became director of Marxist criticism and in 1956, during the events in Hungary, he was one of the few to openly siding with the Soviet Union.
Among his works, Capitalism in the countryside, Il Mezzogiorno in opposition, The agrarian question in the Italian national rebirth and The Italian revolution had particular success, but his writings are innumerable: his bibliography contains 1071 writings and the first date back to 1930. He donated all this material to the "Alcide Cervi" Institute of Gattatico (RE) - of which he was a founder - where it is available to scholars.
His political and family history is narrated in the historical novel The game of the kingdoms, written by his daughter Clara and published by Giunti in 1993.
